In Wheeling, West Virginia McCarthy on February 9, 1950, at around 8pm Joe McCarthy began with the sheet of paper.

“I have here in my hand…”

He visibly possessed something that looked like proof. Held there in front of everyone, in his very senatorial hand, craning necks to see, the paper made the accusation appear documentary.

Its contents remained concealed, but its physical presence supplied authority.

I have here in my hand…

Then he enlarged the danger.

Although Soviet espionage was real, McCarthy took that limited truth, stuffed it into a gigantic rubber monster suit.

He used the paper in his hand as proof of a giant creature that must truly be as big as he swore he knew it to be, and then sent it stomping across the national imagination.

Tomorrow, Trump will begin, first, with a limited truth. Set up just the same way. Call it A Patriotic Straw Man: “Foreign nationals are and have been influencing American elections, and I oppose it.”

Sure. Just like the 50s, so today: foreign governments attempt to influence elections.

Almost everyone opposes that.

But to what meaningful degree did they alter votes, control machines, or determine the result?

Until positive evidence establishes otherwise: not much - and perhaps not at all.

So far, none has.

Then comes the Documentary Red Herring. “I have in my hand today recently DECLASSIFIED reports, the classified details of which would shock your conscience. The impact has reached TITANIC proportions.”

That’s the Red Herring.

“Titanic?!”

It’s the President of the United States holding papers in the White House, telling you they - only JUST DECLASSIFIED - don’t even BEGIN to describe the scale. That gets attention.

“I have here in my hand…”

Then comes the False Sequitur™.

“Therefore, the only and obvious remedy available to me as president is to federalize the entire state of Georgia.

Furthermore, I will deploy armed forces into…”

So, coming LIVE to you tomorrow night, courtesy of Wheeling, West Virginia, the patriotic Straw Man Red Herring False Sequitur.

A simple thing everyone American believes (the patriotic bit - foreign attempts, and we’re against them), made into a GIANT (false) MONSTERY THING

Leading to only one, “obvious” conclusion - to any who loves their county.

Your sequence lead, but falsely. False Sequitur.

On cue, the loyalist networks will erase the joints between the three stages. The Straw Man is enough for them.

Repetition will blur the doubt. Provide the cadence - for chanting and ease of distribution.

Urgency will make the unsupported inferences harder to see.

That was McCarthy’s achievement.

Not proof.

Placement of pieces:

• A limited risk.

• A concealed document.

• An asserted titanic danger…concluding in show trials.

Spinning this country on a wasted axis.

For YEARS.

A nation, a people - forging and re-founding the IDEA of popular sovereignty every day - too damn busy to waste ANY time.

Tomorrow, watch for the held and pointed-at papers.

Then watch the enlargement.

Then watch the leap.

McCarthy held up the list. Trump will hold up reports.

The loyalist networks will stuff the smaller threat into a rubber monster suit. Our task is to spot the zipper down its back before the costume fills the screen.

You can’t make this stuff up.

The speech McCarthy gave in 1950 came to be known as, “The Enemies Within Speech” within less than seven years of his passing.
